Will banks close this February 23 following the operation against ‘El Mencho’? 18 branches of the Bank of Well-Being set on fire
The government of Jalisco confirmed that 18 branches of the Bank of Well-Being were set on fire due to violence following the death of Nemesio Oseguera, known as ‘El Mencho’, leader of the CJNG.
The state government of Jalisco has reported that on February 22, 18 branches of the Bank of Well-Being were set ablaze as a direct consequence of the violent upheaval occurring after the death of Nemesio Oseguera, also known as ‘El Mencho’, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). In addition to the banks, there were also instances of 69 OXXO convenience store branches being torched in various municipalities across Jalisco, leading to the arrest of at least 25 individuals linked to these violent disruptions and narcobloqueos, or drug-related blockades.
The violence is expected to subside by the evening of February 23 as authorities believe that the immediate threats will dissipate, although they have urged residents to steer clear of areas affected by fiery blockades and burnt vehicles. The local government has advised against non-essential travel and recommended that citizens stay indoors or at hotels until further notice. Governor Pablo Lemus of Jalisco announced that a 'Código Rojo' (Red Code) will remain in effect for that day, indicating a high alert status due to the situation's severity.
The implications of these violent outbreaks highlight the ongoing battle against cartel-related violence in Mexico, especially given the notoriety of the CJNG and its leader. The attacks not only disrupt financial institutions but also instill fear in communities, prompting the authorities to bolster security measures and consider additional restrictions to ensure public safety as they navigate this turbulent period.
