In Pyeongtaek, South Korea, a man has made off with GPUs valued at 160 million won from a computer parts retail store. As reported on the 23rd, police authorities stated that the theft took place around 6 am the previous day, when an unidentified male intruder broke into the store located in Cheongbuk-eup. The suspect, referred to as Mr. A, was seen wearing gloves and used tools to shatter a glass door to gain access to the premises, swiftly stealing multiple high-value graphics processing units.
The total value of the stolen items is assessed to be approximately 160 million won. The police are investigating the incident amid rising concerns that the increasing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) has led to elevated prices for such components, suggesting that the crime may have been opportunistic. As of now, the perpetrator has not been apprehended, and law enforcement is utilizing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage to trace the suspect's movements and whereabouts.
The theft highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in the tech retail sector, particularly given the surge in product prices linked to AI advancements.
