Mayor of Kamigenu Village, who is pushing for nuclear waste survey, wins reelection

Masayuki Takahashi, the mayor of Kamigenu Village advocating for a nuclear waste survey, has been reelected amid a high voter turnout.

In the Kamigenu Village mayoral election held on the 22nd, the key point of contention was whether to proceed to the second phase of the nuclear waste survey process. Incumbent Masayuki Takahashi, 75, who supports advancing the survey, won reelection against two challengers: Kazuo Ida, 73, who calls for halting the survey, and Shinichi Kishi, 46, who supports the survey and increased grant funding. Takahashi received 87.85% voter turnout, slightly down from the previous election's 89.24%. After his victory, Takahashi emphasized a deepened understanding among villagers regarding the survey process and mentioned that resident voting is one potential mechanism for gauging public opinion on the proposed shift to the next survey phase.
