Helicopter used in search for prisoner who climbed roof and escaped from prison in Campo Grande

A helicopter is deployed to search for a prisoner who escaped from the Campo Grande prison by climbing onto the roof.

Gilvanderson Damião Vieira França, a 27-year-old inmate, escaped from the Campo Grande prison in Brazil on Sunday. The State Agency for the Administration of the Penitentiary System (Agepen) reported that he may be hiding in the Noroeste neighborhood of the capital. In an effort to recapture him, authorities have mobilized a helicopter to assist in the search operations across the area, reflecting the seriousness of the escape and securing public safety.

The circumstances of Gilvanderson's initial arrest involved a theft attempt where he, alongside a female accomplice named Adriana, attempted to steal approximately 20 kilograms of copper wires from a residential property in the Amambaí neighborhood. This premeditated crime showcased a level of collaboration between the two, as Adriana was allegedly outside monitoring while Gilvanderson disabled the electric fence and accessed the property through its roof. The illegal operation was disrupted by law enforcement, leading to his apprehension and subsequent imprisonment.

The escape has raised concerns regarding prison security measures in Brazil, particularly in light of how quickly and audaciously Gilvanderson was able to flee the facility. With heightened security measures now in place, the authorities are under pressure to ensure the swift recapture of fugitive inmates to mitigate any potential threat they may pose to the public. This incident underscores ongoing challenges within the criminal justice system in managing incarcerated individuals and preventing escapes from correctional facilities.
