Man who attempted to steal helicopter in MG is arrested after invading restricted area of Congonhas Airport

A 52-year-old man, who had been on the run after attempting to steal a helicopter, was apprehended at Congonhas Airport in São Paulo after invading a restricted area.

Luiz Gustavo Fonseca Aires, a 52-year-old individual, made headlines when he attempted to steal a helicopter in Caxambu, Minas Gerais (MG), and subsequently fled from justice after tampering with his electronic monitoring device. On Tuesday morning, he was found and arrested at Congonhas Airport, São Paulo (SP), by the Federal Police, while trying to evade apprehension by entering a restricted area. His arrest follows an outstanding warrant issued by the local court in Caxambu.

According to the Military Police of Minas Gerais, Aires was spotted around 5 a.m. walking in the executive aviation area adjacent to runway 35R without any official identification. His suspicious presence was noted by a security guard, leading to his investigation. Upon confronting Aires, he claimed he was waiting for someone to perform maintenance on an aircraft—a statement that raised further suspicions given his recent criminal history.

This incident not only highlights the ongoing challenges of aviation security in Brazil but also raises questions regarding the effectiveness of electronic monitoring for individuals who are considered a flight risk. As authorities continue to investigate the background and motives of Aires, this case serves as a reminder of how easily individuals can compromise safety at significant transport hubs, underlining the need for enhanced security protocols in both law enforcement and airport management.
