Heavy rains in Paraty, Brazil, led to flooding, falling trees, and landslides over the weekend, particularly affecting the Sertão do Taquari area.

Intense rainfall in Paraty, Rio de Janeiro, on Saturday night resulted in significant disruptions, including flooding, tree falls, and landslides across the municipality. The rainfall measured around 100 millimeters over a duration of approximately three hours, with the first incident reported at 8:15 PM in Sertão do Taquari, where a post fell due to flooding. This area was identified as the hardest hit, necessitating assessments by social assistance teams to address the aftermath of the storm.

In addition to the flooding in Sertão do Taquari, the Brazilian Highway 101 (Rio-Santos) experienced the aftermath of the storm, with 14 trees down across various neighborhoods including Várzea, Praia Grande, Graúna, Rio Pequeno, Barra Grande, and Tarituba. Laranjeiras also reported a fallen tree, while the Paraty-Cunha road saw ten instances of tree falls. Overall, there were 25 incidents of tree falls logged due to the tempest, highlighting the extensive impact of the severe weather on local infrastructure and safety.

The Civil Defense also noted significant landslides along BR-101 before the Graúna area, complicating travel in and around Paraty. The combination of flooding and landslides poses serious challenges for local authorities and emergency services as they work to restore safety and help affected residents, underlining the vulnerability of the region to extreme weather events.
