Vseviov: If we contribute to ending the war in Ukraine, the USA will also contribute
Estonian Foreign Ministry Secretary Jonatan Vseviov argues that European action is necessary for the USA to remain invested in the Ukraine war issue.
Jonatan Vseviov, the Secretary of the Foreign Ministry of Estonia, highlighted the diminishing attention from the USA towards the Ukraine war, suggesting that every new crisis in other regions distracts Washington from its commitments in Ukraine. He believes that the old method of Europe relying on the USA for leadership is outdated. Instead, he asserts that if Europe demonstrates a commitment to take action itself, it could encourage the USA to also make significant contributions toward ending the war.
As the war in Ukraine enters its fourth year, Vseviov expresses concerns that the situation remains just as confusing as it has been throughout the conflict. He reflects on whether the developments have brought peace closer or continued the same complex realities faced since the conflict began. He fears the latter, emphasizing that Russia's objectives have not changed and that the war is not merely about specific territories like Donbass or Crimea; rather, it concerns the whole of Ukraine and the broader security of Europe.
Despite Russia's inability to achieve its military objectives, Vseviov warns that this does not alter the overall diplomatic picture or the long-term implications of the conflict for European security. He reiterates that the war affects nations across Europe, and its unresolved status continues to be a critical challenge to regional and global stability, indicating the urgent need for Europe to step up its role in this matter.
