No challenger for Orpo - Häkkänen wants to continue
Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen supports the re-election of party leader Petteri Orpo and seeks to continue as a deputy leader of the National Coalition Party in Finland.
In the upcoming summer party congress, Defense Minister and Vice Chair Antti Häkkänen (National Coalition Party) has expressed that he will not challenge Petteri Orpo for the party leadership position. Instead, Häkkänen, who has served as the deputy leader of the National Coalition Party since 2016, supports Orpo's bid for reelection as party leader. Häkkänen has announced his intention to run for a new term as vice-chair for the 2026-2028 period, emphasizing his commitment to the party's goals and leadership.
Elina Valtonen, the Foreign Minister, also indicated during a recent appearance on Yle that she would not contend for the leadership against Orpo at the June party congress in Jyväskylä. This scenario underscores a stability in the party leadership, as both Häkkänen and Valtonen have opted to back Orpo rather than initiate a divisive leadership contest. If Häkkänen succeeds in securing his candidacy, he would be elected to the deputy position for a remarkable sixth consecutive time, reflecting his strong standing within the party.
Historically, the National Coalition Party has maintained an unwritten rule limiting the deputy chair's tenure to three terms, or six years. Should Häkkänen's reelection proceed smoothly, it would not only mark a significant personal achievement but also highlight the continuity of leadership within the party, as they navigate upcoming political challenges and elections in Finland.
