The leadership battle of the National Coalition Party is almost over: Orpo received huge declarations

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo is set to continue as the leader of the National Coalition Party, with no challengers expected to emerge for the party's leadership conference in June.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has announced his readiness to continue as the chairman of the National Coalition Party during the party's chairman's day events over the weekend. Orpo expressed his belief that his work is still ongoing, indicating his dedication to the role and the progress made thus far. As the party approaches its conference in Jyväskylä in early June, it appears highly likely that he will not face any challengers for the leadership position.

Defense Minister and deputy chairman Antti Häkkänen has stated unequivocally in a phone interview with Iltalehti that he does not intend to contest Orpo's leadership. Häkkänen confirmed his support for Orpo, stating, "I am not challenging him," and noted that there have been no moves to change this situation. This lack of opposition highlights a degree of stability within the party, though some key figures have expressed a desire for more competition in the leadership race.

In a recent Iltalehti poll, 59 percent of respondents indicated they wished to see a genuine contest for the party chairman position involving several prominent National Coalition Party members. However, with the current dynamics, it seems unlikely that such a competitive challenge will materialize, pointing towards a consolidation of power around Orpo as he prepares for the upcoming party conference.
