Serra do Guaraú in Peruíbe reopened after Civil Defense inspection; area monitored
The stretch of the Guaraú Road in Peruíbe was reopened after technical inspection by São Paulo's Civil Defense, following preventive measures due to heavy rains.
The Guaraú Road in Peruíbe, located on the São Paulo coast, was reopened on Saturday night after a technical inspection carried out by the São Paulo Civil Defense along with the Technological Research Institute (IPT). The area had been closed earlier that morning as a preventive measure, part of the SP Sempre Alerta - Rains operation aimed at avoiding accidents and minimizing risks to the population. Images released by the Peruíbe City Hall on the same day showed significant water flow down the hill, with points of land slide and displaced asphalt.
The state’s Emergency Management Center (CGE) sent out two mobile alerts to residents about the intense rains, the closure of the Guaraú Road, and the associated risks of landslides. Over the last 24 hours, Peruíbe recorded a rain accumulation of 292 millimeters, which is equivalent to significant rainfall, posing risks for the area's infrastructure and safety. The warning measures and effective communication to the public illustrate the efforts of the state to manage weather-related hazards and protect citizens.
The reopening of this vital road not only restores access for residents and visitors to the coastal region but also emphasizes the importance of ongoing monitoring in light of severe weather conditions. Continuing surveillance of the area will be critical in ensuring local safety and mitigating potential hazards during extreme weather events, particularly as Brazil faces increasing environmental challenges related to climate change.
