The opposition leader in Kaunas has proposed measures to address skyrocketing heating costs, suggesting partial renovations and increased government support for local residents.
In response to the dramatic increase in heating bills this January, opposition leader Paulius Lukševičius from the Kaunas city council urged the need for both municipal and national solutions to mitigate the burden on residents. He suggested that if homeowners cannot afford to fully renovate their buildings, they may consider partial renovations, focusing specifically on crucial components like the heating nodes. This approach aims to offer immediate relief to residents while allowing them to manage costs more effectively.
Lukševičius highlighted the staggering statistics where heating bills for renovated apartments surged by 50%, while those for non-renovated apartments almost doubled, pointing to an urgent need for intervention. He noted that both construction work and materials have escalated in cost, suggesting that in order to effectively address these issues, the level of financial support needs to increase significantly from 20% to 40% for residents, potentially with additional coverage from the local government. This increase in support would provide residents with more substantial aid amidst the ongoing heating crisis.
