‘What I did was try to protect my son and leave’: neighbors quantify damages from tree fall that affected house and vehicles in Alborada

Heavy rainfall in Guayaquil led to a large tree collapsing onto a house and several vehicles, causing significant damage and alarming local residents.

In the Alborada neighborhood of northern Guayaquil, a severe storm on Friday night caused a substantial tree to crash onto a residential property and multiple vehicles. The fallen tree broke the upper structure of the affected house, leading to visible cracks in the rooftop and dangling electrical wires. Emergency services worked to clear the tree from the road during the morning, highlighting the storm's immediate impact on the community.

Jenny Escalante, a resident whose home was directly impacted, described the terrifying moment when the tree fell as she was preparing for her son’s medical routine. Living with a child who has autism and visual impairment, Escalante recounted her fear during the storm, stating she initially thought it was merely lightning. The experience was traumatic, as portions of the tree and the roof collapsed into her bedroom while they were inside.

The incident underscores the vulnerabilities faced by residents in areas prone to severe weather events, raising concerns about the structural integrity of homes and the potential dangers posed by large trees in urban settings. As the community begins to assess the damage and recover from the incident, the need for improved urban planning and storm preparedness becomes evident, especially in maintaining safety for families during extreme weather conditions.
