"Sixth graders confess that they have nude photos on their phones." CTU instructors warned about the risks of the online space

CTU instructors highlighted the dangers children face online, emphasizing that many parents underestimate these risks.

In a recent press conference held in Prague, instructors from the Czech Telecommunications Office (ČTÚ), Václav Linhart and Jaroslav Doležal, discussed the alarming reality of online dangers faced by children today. They noted that many kids receive smartphones at an early age, with one anecdote detailing a first grader who received a smartphone with unlimited data after completing preschool. This exposure to technology is concerning, as children often find themselves unprepared for the risks associated with the online world.

The instructors warned that children can easily encounter violent, erotic, or manipulative content while browsing the internet. They also pointed out the role of social media algorithms in amplifying exposure to such harmful materials. The problem is compounded by the fact that many parents are only familiar with mainstream platforms like Facebook and Instagram, failing to recognize the breadth of online threats that exist on other gaming platforms and social networks.

The discussion brought to light the urgent need for increased parental awareness regarding online safety and the potential psychological impacts on children. As children navigate this complex digital landscape, it is crucial for parents to engage in open discussions with their children about the dangers present in the online space while promoting digital literacy and responsible use of technology. The awareness campaign initiated by the ČTÚ aims to better equip parents and children alike in understanding and overcoming these risks.
