Thousands protested in Zagreb against the construction of large chicken farms and slaughterhouses in Sisak-Moslavina County.
In Zagreb, thousands of people gathered to protest against the construction of large chicken farms and slaughterhouses in the Sisak-Moslavina County. The demonstration was organized by several environmental groups including Zelena akcija (Green Action) and Prijatelji životinja (Animal Friends), as well as local civic initiatives such as 'Siščani ne žele biti Smetlišćani' and 'Sunjani ne žele biti smuljani'. Protesters marched from King Tomislav Square to Zrinjevac, vocally opposing environmental pollution and the proposed farming project.
Messages displayed on banners ranged from 'No mega farms, yes to life' to 'Croatia is not Europe's dump', highlighting the public's concerns over potential soil, water, and air pollution, as well as the odors that could emanate from facilities built less than a kilometer from homes. Protesters expressed skepticism about the project's adherence to environmental standards and were not convinced by promises of 15,000 new low-wage jobs for foreign workers, which they believe would not benefit the local community. The protest reflects broader anxieties about industrial farming practices and their impact on local environments and lifestyles.
The underlying issue also raises questions about the potential ecological implications of large-scale chicken farms, particularly concerning investments from foreign entities. As the community grapples with the possibility of such developments, the debate surrounding agricultural practices and their sustainability becomes increasingly critical, linking local livelihoods to global economic interests.
