Restorers Try to Restore the Sound of a Century-Old Piano Affected by a Historic Flood in RS
Restorers in Canoas, Brazil, are working on reconstructing a century-old piano that was damaged during a historic flood in May 2024.
In Canoas, near Porto Alegre, Brazil, two restorers have been meticulously working to reconstruct a 120-year-old Schiedmayer piano that was severely damaged in a historic flood caused by the overflowing of the Rio dos Sinos in May 2024. Initially arrived from Germany in the early 20th century, the piano had become a key exhibit at the Museu Visconde de São Leopoldo before it suffered extensive water damage, requiring a labor-intensive restoration process. The damaged pieces of wood, many marked by termites and mold, lie organized on the floor, which speaks to the significant effort and craftsmanship needed to return the instrument to its former glory.
