Hot meals available again

Reykjavík's city council has contracted Krydd and Kavíar to supply hot meals to local social institutions after a listeria outbreak at a production kitchen.

The production kitchen at Vitatorg has been closed following a detection of listeria bacteria during routine testing, leading to a suspension of meal services in the city's social centers. The Reykjavík City Council has now made an agreement with the company Krydd and Kavíar to produce and distribute meals to homes, community centers, and assisted living facilities under its welfare department. This comes after weeks without meal service in the social centers, due to the need for testing and prioritizing food deliveries.

In the wake of these developments, the city council had previously approved significant renovations for the kitchen at Vitatorg, aiming to ensure the safety and quality of the meal production process. Initially, the contract with Krydd and Kavíar is set for two months, providing up to a thousand meals daily, which aligns closely with the production capabilities of the Vitatorg kitchen prior to its closure. This swift action aims to restore vital meal services to vulnerable populations who rely on them for nutritional support.

The situation highlights the importance of health and safety in food production, and the city council's response reflects its commitment to public health and welfare. As the meal service resumes, attention will be paid not only to the immediate restoration of service but also to the long-term improvements in kitchen operations to prevent such issues in the future.
