No hot meals available at community centers

Due to the closure of the production kitchen in Vitatorgi following the detection of listeria, no hot meals have been offered at community centers in Reykjavík.

The production kitchen at Vitatorgi has been closed after listeria bacteria was detected during routine testing. This closure has resulted in the suspension of hot meal services at the community centers managed by Reykjavík City. Prior to this, more than nine hundred meals were prepared daily from this kitchen for distribution to residents or served at local centers.

In light of the listeria detection earlier this month, Reykjavík City reported some residents experiencing gastrointestinal discomfort. Although concerns arose from a few reported cases, officials emphasized that there have been no confirmed severe illnesses or additional cases of listeriosis. The health and safety protocols seem to be effectively mitigating risks, but the ongoing closure of the kitchen continues to impact the availability of hot meals for community members.

The response from local health authorities indicates an emphasis on public safety, with no further information about confirmed infections, allowing them to focus on ensuring community members are informed and safe while addressing any contamination risks. The closure of meal services highlights the consequences of food safety issues in urban areas and the importance of maintaining stringent health standards to prevent potential outbreaks.
