North Korea has inaugurated its largest greenhouse farm in Sinuiju, located in the northwestern part of the country near the Chinese border. This initiative is largely seen as an effort to demonstrate the regime's accomplishments in rural development and agriculture, particularly as Kim Jong-un emphasizes these achievements during the Workers' Party Congress that began on the 19th. Kim boasts of overcoming recent hardships and claimed substantial improvements in both urban and rural areas, underscoring the importance of balanced progress throughout the nation.

The Sinuiju greenhouse complex is touted as one of North Korea's significant projects, having been in the spotlight especially after severe flooding in July 2024 that affected the region. Reports suggest that military personnel and youth groups were involved in the reconstruction efforts following this disaster. Since the project's inception in February of last year, Kim has visited the site multiple times, and it culminated in a completion ceremony earlier this month. The facility spans 450 hectares and includes various agricultural infrastructures such as hydroponic systems and vegetable processing plants.

From the vantage point of Dandong in China's Liaoning province, observers can see the organized layout of greenhouses against the backdrop of high-rise residential buildings in Sinuiju. The facility reportedly imports materials such as plastic and frames from China, indicating a reliance on cross-border trade for agricultural development. As North Korea pushes forward with this landmark project, it not only aims to bolster its food supply but also conveys a message of resilience and progress amidst international isolation and economic challenges.
