Unassuming Singer with a King’s Voice. The Blackcap has been Named Bird of the Year

The blackcap has been declared the Bird of the Year for 2026 in Czechia, symbolizing a century of the Czech Ornithological Society.

The blackcap, an inconspicuous gray bird often overlooked in dense shrubs, has been officially designated as Bird of the Year for 2026. Its characteristic strong flute-like song fills gardens and forest undergrowth, heralding the arrival of spring in Czechia. This designation coincides with the centenary celebration of the Czech Ornithological Society, marking a significant moment in Czech environmental appreciation.

The blackcap, known in Czech as černohlávek, is slightly smaller and slimmer than a sparrow, showcasing a dark gray upper body and light olive-gray underparts. Its distinctive feature, the cap on its head, is black for males and cinnamon-brown for females and young. The name of the species is derived from this prominent cap and reflects its notable characteristics, which have made it a beloved bird among Czech birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

Zdeněk Vermouzek, the director of the Czech Ornithological Society, highlights the adaptability of the blackcap, noting that it has thrived amidst environmental changes. Originally found in forests and farmlands, it has successfully infiltrated parks, gardens, and urban green spaces. This adaptability not only increases its population but also symbolizes the broader narrative of environmental resilience in the Czech Republic, showcasing the vital connection between local wildlife and community engagement during moments of ecological celebration.
