Fire in the northern zone of São Paulo burns 40 shacks and leaves at least two injured

A fire in Brasilândia, São Paulo, burned 40 shacks and injured at least two people, igniting rapidly and affecting a large area.

On Friday afternoon, a significant fire broke out in Brasilândia, a neighborhood in the northern zone of São Paulo, consuming approximately 40 makeshift homes and resulting in at least two injuries. According to the fire department, the flames initiated around 6 PM from one of the shacks and spread rapidly to adjacent structures within a matter of hours. The incident impacted an area of around 700 square meters near Avenida Deputado Cantídio Sampaio and has prompted a swift emergency response from local authorities.

Thirty firefighters, supported by 12 vehicles, were dispatched to manage the blaze. Reports indicate that an adult was treated by the Mobile Emergency Service (SAMU) for an ankle sprain, while a child suffered mild smoke inhalation. Thankfully, there have been no reported fatalities related to the fire. The firefighting efforts managed to contain the flames by about 8 PM, but eyewitness accounts and aerial footage from TV Globo's helicopter depict significant damage across the affected community.

As of early Saturday morning, the cause of the fire remains unknown. This incident underscores ongoing challenges related to fire safety and housing conditions in some of São Paulo's poorer neighborhoods, where makeshift residences are often constructed with flammable materials and lack proper safety regulations. The aftermath will likely prompt discussions about fire prevention measures and the need for improved support systems for residents in vulnerable areas.
