Ramadan: Adamawa governor relaxes night-time restriction on tricycles

The Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, has relaxed night-time restrictions on commercial tricycles during the Ramadan period to facilitate easier movement for Muslim faithful.

Ahmadu Fintiri, the Governor of Adamawa State in Nigeria, has announced a modification to the existing night-time restrictions on commercial tricycles, known locally as Keke NAPEP, to accommodate the needs of Muslim citizens during the 2026 Ramadan period. Effective immediately, the curfew will begin an hour later, now starting at 11 PM instead of the previous 10 PM and running until 5 AM. This amendment aims to facilitate easier access to late-night tafsir sessions, which are religious gatherings commonly attended by Muslims during Ramadan.

The decision was communicated through a statement from the Governor's Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, indicating that the changes are intended to support the religious practices of the community and improve transportation options at night during this holy month. The Governor’s office emphasized that this adjustment will help in easing the movement of Muslim faithful, allowing them better access to various nighttime religious activities.

This change comes in light of a prior imposition of restrictions by the state government in February 2021, which highlighted the need to balance public safety and the cultural-religious practices within the state. The relaxation of the curfew is expected to positively impact the local economy as well, by allowing tricycle operators to work longer hours during a period that sees increased demand for transport services among those participating in Ramadan activities.
