Over a hundred thousand euros in funding for a special association: This is what it is

A Finnish association providing support for individuals who hear voices receives over 131,000 euros in funding to continue their peer support activities.

The Finnish association, Moniääniset ry, which assists individuals who hear voices that others do not, has been awarded significant funding amounting to 131,250 euros by STEA, under the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. This funding is essential for the continuation of their peer support services, which aim to address the stigma and misunderstanding surrounding auditory hallucinations. Understanding and discussing this phenomenon is crucial for many, yet the lack of communication can cause distress for those affected.

Annika Roihujuuri, the Executive Director of the association, emphasizes that hearing voices is often a mischaracterized experience shrouded in stigma, leading to isolation for those affected. The funding will help to provide a low-threshold peer support platform where individuals can openly discuss their experiences with others who can relate. Ranging from support groups to individual counseling sessions, the association seeks to create a safe space for dialogue, helping to mitigate feelings of fear and confusion for those experiencing these auditory phenomena.

Research indicates that about 10% of the population has encountered such experiences, reflecting a significant need for accessible support structures like that offered by Moniääniset ry. This funding not only represents financial support but also a step towards normalizing the conversation around mental health and voice-hearing, promoting a greater understanding and acceptance of diverse psychological experiences in society.
