Estonian Authorities: Cooperation with Ukraine to Catch Phone Fraudsters is Ongoing

Estonian authorities are collaborating with Ukraine to apprehend criminal organizations involved in phone fraud despite challenges posed by the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Estonian law enforcement officials have confirmed active collaboration with Ukrainian authorities to dismantle criminal networks responsible for phone fraud. The ongoing war in Ukraine complicates these efforts, particularly as the leaders of these fraud organizations often operate from various countries. Estonian State Prosecutor Jürgen Hüva has indicated that a notification regarding the neutralization of one such network is expected soon.

Both Prosecutor Hüva and other officials, including Interior Minister Igor Taro and the head of the Cyber and Economic Crimes Unit of the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA), Hannes Kelt, have assured ERR of the ongoing cooperation. They emphasized that a cooperation agreement has been established between the Estonian police and Ukrainian police, with annual discussions focused on combatting cybercrime and phone fraud. This partnership is critical as the threat from such international scams continues to rise.

The Estonian police have been working closely with Ukraine for several years now to combat international fraud crimes. Meetings have been held with Ukrainian colleagues at the operational level, with a focus on the most effective strategies to counter such criminal activity. As the situation develops, authorities remain vigilant and committed to addressing the challenges posed by these fraud networks that exploit technological means for their illicit gains.
