Public consultations underway on future of Alberta’s Fortress Mountain Resort
Public consultations are being held for the redevelopment of Fortress Mountain Resort in Alberta as part of a government initiative to establish all-season resorts in the province.
In Kananaskis Country, Alberta, public consultations are currently taking place regarding the proposed development of a new all-seasons resort at Fortress Mountain. This initiative is part of Alberta's broader plan announced in December to create three all-season resort areas, with the promise of generating thousands of jobs and significant economic benefits for the province. Fortress Mountain, which previously operated as a ski hill until its closure in 2004, is being targeted for revitalization, and the consultations are a platform for community input on the plans.
The development at Fortress Mountain is set to include various infrastructure changes such as hotels, gondolas, and trails, alongside adjustments to provincial park boundaries. This would enable the resort to offer year-round activities and attract tourists beyond just winter skiing. An open house event at Mount Royal University in Calgary allowed residents and stakeholders to learn about the project and voice their opinions. Proponents of the initiative argue that it will create over 1,000 jobs and stimulate local economies, emphasizing the potential for enhanced recreational opportunities in the Kananaskis region.
However, this proposal has raised questions regarding environmental impact and changes to existing park boundaries, with some community members expressing concerns over preserving the natural landscape. The consultations serve as a critical opportunity for dialogue between the government, developers, and the local community, ensuring that various perspectives are heard before moving forward with the plans for the revitalized resort area.
