Estonia wins its first medal in the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics

Estonian athlete Henri Sildaru won a silver medal in the halfpipe event at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.

Estonian snowboarder Henri Sildaru, only 19 years old, has made history by winning the country's first medal at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, securing silver in the halfpipe competition. Sildaru achieved a score of 93 points on his third attempt, narrowly missing first place by just 0.75 points behind American Alex Ferreira, who scored 93.75 points. The bronze medal was claimed by Canadian Brendan Mackay with a score of 91 points.

During an interview with Estonian television ERR, Sildaru expressed his disbelief and joy at winning a medal, stating that he did not expect to achieve this success going into the Olympics. He had hoped for a shot at a medal if everything went well, and now he proudly wears his medal around his neck. This achievement brings great pride not only to Sildaru but also to the Estonian sporting community, which has seen his potential since he won the world junior championship at just 14 years old.

In addition to the halfpipe event, Sildaru competed in two other disciplines at the Olympics: slopestyle, where he finished 21st, and Big Air, finishing 22nd, thus not qualifying for the finals in those events. However, his silver medal in the halfpipe marks a significant milestone for Estonia, and the president, Alar Karis, expressed joy over this achievement, underscoring the importance of the sport and the growing reputation of Estonian athletes on international platforms.
