Estonia wins its first medal at the Milan-Cortina Olympic Games in freestyle competitions

An Estonian athlete secured a bronze medal in freestyle competitions at his Olympic debut in Milan-Cortina.

In a remarkable performance at the Milan-Cortina Olympics, Estonia's Sildaru clinched a bronze medal in freestyle competitions during his last run, scoring an impressive 93 points. Only American Alex Ferreira, who achieved a score of 93.75, surpassed him on that day. The podium was completed by Canada's Brendan Mackay, who scored 91 points. Sildaru, at just 19 years of age, marked a significant milestone in his sporting career with this being his first Olympic appearance.

The competition not only marked a personal triumph for Sildaru but also underscored the athletic spirit of the Estonian team, following in the footsteps of his sister, Kelly Sildaru, who won a bronze medal in freestyle four years ago at the Beijing Olympics. While Kelly has been a standout athlete, she faced challenges in this year's competition, finishing 13th with a score of 73.75, falling short of reaching the finals.

As the Milan Olympic Games approach their conclusion on Sunday, Sildaru’s achievement stands out as a highlight for Estonia, showcasing the country's growing presence in competitive winter sports, especially in freestyle events. His success may inspire further investment and interest in winter sports within Estonia and could encourage young athletes to pursue their Olympic dreams in future competitions.
