Hailstorm recorded in Porto da Folha in the High Sertão

A hailstorm was recorded in the municipality of Porto da Folha, Sergipe, Brazil, confirmed by the state's environmental agency.

A rare hailstorm occurred in the municipality of Porto da Folha, located in the High Sertão region of Sergipe, Brazil, on Friday afternoon. The event was officially confirmed by the State Department of the Environment, Sustainability and Climate Actions (Semac). Reports and videos shared on social media depict astonished individuals in a football field, caught off guard by the sudden hailstones falling from the sky.

Meteorologist Wanda Tathyana from Semac explained that the hailstorm was triggered by a strong convective cloud in the region, typical in areas where high temperatures and humidity create conducive conditions for such weather phenomena. This occurrence highlights the unique climate characteristics of the sertão and agreste regions of Brazil, where convective clouds are more likely to develop.

In light of this event, Semac has renewed its meteorological warning concerning a cyclonic vortex, indicating that moderate to heavy rains could affect the entire Sergipe territory until Saturday night. Residents are advised to prepare for potential weather disturbances as atmospheric conditions remain unstable, indicating further rainfall in the coming days.
