Megashow in Paulista may be allowed despite chaos during pre-Carnival, says São Paulo prosecutor
A São Paulo prosecutor indicated that the chaos experienced during pre-Carnival events will not affect the decision to allow the city to hold large free concerts on Avenida Paulista.
The Urbanism and Housing Prosecutor's Office in São Paulo has stated that it will not take into consideration the disorder that occurred during pre-Carnival events in the city center when deciding on an agreement to allow the mayor's administration to host up to two large free concerts each year on Avenida Paulista. Prosecutor Marcelo Otavio Camargo Ramos emphasized that the nature of the proposed large concerts differs significantly from that of the chaotic pre-Carnival street events, as the concerts will be controlled access and static events.
On February 8, two major pre-Carnival parades took place simultaneously on Rua da Consolação, leading to moments of chaos including crowd crushes and unauthorized building invasions. This underlines ongoing safety concerns surrounding large public gatherings in crowded urban environments. The city administration, under Mayor Ricardo Nunes of the MDB, had approved the presence of the Bloco Skol parade, which featured internationally renowned DJ Calvin Harris, indicating a shift towards embracing large-scale festive events despite past chaotic incidents.
As the prosecutor pursues the agreement for concerts on Avenida Paulista, the implications extend to city safety policies, public enjoyment, and economic opportunities associated with such events. The situation exemplifies the ongoing balancing act that city officials and law enforcement must navigate in promoting culture and leisure while ensuring public safety and order during large-scale events.
