Dream Wedding Couple Lost Legal Dispute
A couple known from the 'Dream Weddings' show lost a legal battle against their landlord regarding health issues stemming from their rental apartment.
Mikko Mäkinen and Henna Heikka-Mäkinen, a couple known from the Finnish reality show 'Unelmahäät' (Dream Weddings), were embroiled in a legal dispute with their landlord after alleging health issues from residing in a rental property. They moved into the apartment in October 2022 and vacated it in July 2023, claiming they experienced health problems believed to be linked to poor indoor air quality in the building, with symptoms reportedly starting just weeks after moving in.
The couple sought compensation for allergic reactions, asthma, damage to personal belongings, and moving expenses, alongside demands for a rent reduction. To support their claims, they presented several medical documents to the court. However, the court found the evidence insufficient, stating that the medical opinions relied heavily on the couple's personal account, and there was no established connection between their symptoms and the condition of the property. Additionally, claims regarding damage to their belongings remained unproven.
According to the court's verdict, investigations by a building health expert revealed no health hazards related to the apartment, undermining the couple's claims. This ruling highlights the complexities involved in tenant-landlord disputes over health-related issues, especially when medical evidence is largely circumstantial, and the burden of proof lies heavily on those making the claims.
