Dream Weddings couple Henna and Mikko lost the mold house dispute – tens of thousands in compensation

Henna Heikka-Mäkinen and Mikko Mäkinen lost a legal dispute regarding a mold-infested rental property, resulting in a significant financial penalty against them.

Henna Heikka-Mäkinen and Mikko Mäkinen, known from the television show 'Dream Weddings', have faced off against their landlord in a court case concerning a rental property contaminated with mold. The dispute was recently decided in favor of the landlords, with the court ruling that the couple was liable for the landlords' legal costs, amounting to nearly 24,000 euros. Additionally, their own claims for damages totaling around 80,000 euros were dismissed completely.

The couple’s case stemmed from their assertion that they fell ill due to the poor indoor air quality of the house they rented in Sastamala from October 2022 to July 2023. They presented numerous medical certificates as part of their evidence, seeking compensation for health issues related to asthma and allergies, as well as for damage to their belongings and relocation expenses. Despite their extensive claims and documentation, the court found insufficient grounds to support their allegations.

This ruling highlights the challenges tenants face when pursuing claims against landlords, particularly related to health issues stemming from property conditions. The significant financial implications for Henna and Mikko serve as a cautionary tale for renters regarding the risks involved in legal disputes over tenant-landlord relationships in Finland, especially in cases involving alleged property defects.
