Brazil seeks to facilitate chicken meat trade in India, says Minister of Agriculture

A Brazilian delegation discussed reducing tariffs to facilitate chicken meat exports to India, aiming to enhance bilateral trade relations.

A Brazilian delegation visited India to negotiate the expansion of trade relations, particularly focusing on the export of Brazilian chicken meat. The discussions included a request for reduced tariff rates on imports, as Brazil is currently struggling to sell its chicken to the large Indian market due to high import taxes. In 2025, Brazil exported a mere 2.47 tons of chicken to India, while other markets like the UAE received significantly more, highlighting the untapped potential in the Indian market.

The Minister of Agriculture emphasized the willingness of Brazil to establish reciprocity in trade by highlighting potential imports from India, including pomegranates and macadamia nuts. Along with the request for tariff reductions, Brazil is also seeking to introduce additional products like pigeon peas and expand opportunities for Brazilian chicken meat and mate tea, aiming to diversify and enhance its agricultural trade with India.

This move reflects Brazil's strategic interest in entering one of the world's most populous markets, which remains largely inaccessible due to existing tariffs. By fostering trade ties with India, Brazil hopes to strengthen its position in global agriculture, given its status as the largest global exporter of chicken meat, and leverage potential new markets for its agricultural products.
