25 Estonian Artists Participate in Sooster Memorial Monument Design Competition

Twenty-five artists from Estonia are competing in the design contest for a memorial monument dedicated to the artist Ülo Sooster.

The Sooster Foundation has received 25 registrations for the design competition for a memorial monument dedicated to the artist Ülo Sooster, with submissions due by March 16. The top three winners will be announced by mid-April. The monument is set to be located in Kärdla, at the address Uus street 4, near the former school attended by Sooster and surrounded by several educational institutions.

Situated in Hiiumaa, the site is significant not only geographically but also historically, as this region holds sentimental value for Sooster, who grew up here and consistently drew inspiration from its beauty. The competition is being organized in collaboration with the Hiiumaa Municipal Government, emphasizing the community's role in honoring its local talents. This memorial aims to open discussions about Sooster's contributions to art and could serve to inspire young people and educators alike.

This initiative is reflective of a broader acknowledgment of local artists and their cultural impact within Estonia. It provides a platform for current artists to showcase their interpretations and ideas, ensuring the legacy of Sooster, a figure in Soviet underground art, continues to resonate in contemporary discourse, enriching the cultural landscape of Estonia further.
