Greenlandic websites hit by attack
Several Greenlandic websites are currently down due to a major DDoS attack, confirmed by the Danish Directorate for Society Security.
Several Greenlandic websites have been disrupted and taken offline due to a significant DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. The Danish Directorate for Society Security has verified the ongoing situation, indicating that they are closely monitoring the developments and maintaining communication with relevant authorities in both Denmark and Greenland regarding the attacks. The statement highlights the seriousness of the cyber threat being faced by these websites.
According to reports from DR, the attacks are attributed to the prorussian hacker group NoName057(16), which has previously executed large-scale attacks on the websites of Danish municipalities and ministries during the local elections in November. These events showcase a pattern of cyber aggression targeting critical infrastructure and digital assets in Denmark and Greenland, raising alarms about national cybersecurity.
Moreover, the Defence Intelligence Service (FE) has linked this hacking group to the Russian state, suggesting that these attacks may fall under the broader context of geopolitical tensions involving Russia. In December, American authorities also noted that NoName057(16) is a project directly sponsored by the Kremlin. The ramifications of such attacks could lead to intensified scrutiny on cybersecurity measures within Denmark and its territories, prompting dialogue on defensive strategies against future cyber threats.
