SON praises standardization of Enugu cassava processing centers

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria has commended the standardization of cassava processing centers in Enugu State under the IFAD-VCDP initiative, highlighting areas for improvement in compliance.

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has acknowledged the successful standardization of cassava processing centers established in Enugu State through the International Fund for Agricultural Development – Value Chain Development Programme (IFAD-VCDP). The inspection of the facilities, which took place in Ako Nike and Umueze Umaga Ezimo-Agu, revealed that the centers are largely compliant with existing standards. However, SON officials pointed out specific areas needing further improvements, especially in product labeling, which is crucial for consumer information and safety.

SON's State Coordinator, Mr. Peter Ameh, emphasized the positive aspects of hygiene and manufacturing practices at the centers, noting the significant efforts made by IFAD-VCDP in establishing these facilities. Despite the encouraging findings, he mentioned that a comprehensive laboratory analysis of the cassava products has not yet been conducted, leaving some aspects of standard compliance open for further assessment. This underscores the need for continuous monitoring and support to ensure that quality is maintained as production scales up.

Ameh encouraged farmers and agro-processors to collaborate with SON in their operational practices to enhance the quality and compliance of their products. His statement reflects the ongoing commitment to improving agricultural practices in Nigeria, particularly in the cassava sector, which plays a vital role in the country's economy. By adhering to the established standards, stakeholders can expect improved market access and consumer trust, ultimately benefiting the entire cassava value chain in Enugu State.
