Prosecutors in South Korea have decided not to appeal the acquittal of former Democratic Party leader Song Young-gil in a bribery case linked to political funding.
In a significant development regarding the political funding controversy associated with Song Young-gil, former leader of South Korea's Democratic Party, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office announced that it would not appeal the recent appeals court ruling that acquitted him of all charges. Song Young-gil faced allegations of distributing envelopes containing illegal political donations in connection with the Democratic Party’s 2021 convention, but both the initial and appellate courts ruled in his favor, citing issues with the evidence gathered against him. The case began when a recording by Lee Jung-geun, former deputy secretary-general of the Democratic Party, prompted an investigation into these alleged irregularities but was dismissed due to unlawful evidence collection practices by the prosecutors.
