Song Young-gil returns to the Democratic Party... Jeong Cheong-rae says "Expecting a significant role"
The Democratic Party of Korea has approved the return of former leader Song Young-gil following his acquittal in a corruption trial.
On the 27th, the Democratic Party of Korea officially approved the reinstatement of former leader Song Young-gil during a closed-door Supreme Council meeting held at the 2·28 Democratic Movement Memorial Hall in Daegu. Senior spokesperson Park Soo-hyun announced that the resolution came after a review by the party's qualification committee, allowing for Song's return at the party's request. This move is significant not only for Song but also for the party as it seeks to consolidate power and show unity going into upcoming elections.
Democratic Party chairman Jeong Cheong-rae expressed his sincere welcome of Song's return, emphasizing hopes for his substantial contributions to the party's development and the success of the Lee Jae-myung government. Jeong noted that typically, members who leave the party face penalties in the form of reduced support in future candidacies, but he made an exception for Song, arguing it was noteworthy to facilitate his return without such penalties given the current political climate.
Song Young-gil had initially left the Democratic Party in 2023 amid allegations related to the "money envelope scandal" during a party convention. However, after being acquitted in a second trial regarding these allegations on the 13th, he promptly applied for reinstatement on the 20th. His return is seen as a critical step for the party to regain stability and is likely to influence its direction and strategy moving forward, especially in light of the upcoming political challenges they face.
