Microsoft has opened the treasure! Will invest ₹4 lakh crore in Global South including India
Microsoft announced a significant investment of ₹4 lakh crore in AI infrastructure and skill development in the Global South, with a focus on India during the AI Impact Summit 2026.
During the AI Impact Summit 2026 held in India, Microsoft revealed its ambitious plan to invest around $50 billion (approximately ₹4 lakh crore) in AI-related infrastructure and skill development by 2030. The company, represented by Vice Chairman Brad Smith, emphasized that the benefits of artificial intelligence are not evenly distributed globally, with some regions advancing rapidly while others lag behind. Microsoft's commitment aims to ensure that AI reaches not just large countries and corporations but also connects with ordinary people living in less developed regions.
Brad Smith pointed out that the Global South, encompassing countries like India, Africa, and Latin America, presents a significant opportunity for AI utilization, given the availability of talent and potential users. However, he stressed that without proper infrastructure and training, the full benefits of AI cannot be realized. This highlights the need for tailored solutions that address the unique challenges and requirements of these regions.
To bridge the existing gap, Microsoft plans to focus on developing AI data centers and cloud infrastructure while enhancing local AI skills. Initiatives will also be aimed at involving teachers and students in AI learning and application, further emphasizing the importance of education in leveraging technology for the benefit of society. This strategic investment represents a pivotal moment in making AI more accessible and beneficial across different socio-economic backgrounds in the Global South.
