Lokk: One should leave when it's fun, not when everyone expects your death

Tiina Lokk reflects on her leadership of the PÖFF film festival, emphasizing that one should leave at their peak rather than in decline.

Tiina Lokk, the outgoing artistic director of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF), shared her thoughts on her departure during an interview on 'Cultural Capital Awards.' She believes that one should choose to leave when everything is at its best and everyone is having fun, rather than when it is expected due to declining popularity. Lokk has been honored with a lifetime achievement award for her contributions to bringing Estonia onto the global film festival map.

Under Lokk's guidance, the Black Nights Film Festival has celebrated its 30th anniversary, gaining significant recognition both locally and internationally. Lokk recalls that, during the festival's early years, she doubted its longevity, even as it approached its tenth anniversary. However, she now feels confident about the festival's future, citing its growth and development.

Lokk also pointed out the unique challenges that the PÖFF faces compared to other major film festivals, particularly due to Estonia's small market size and geographic location. She remarked on the difficulty of competing with established festivals like Cannes, which have more resources and a larger audience base. Despite these challenges, Lokk believes in the festival's potential to continue thriving and influencing global cinema, suggesting that passion and dedication are key to its ongoing success.
