Without a new supplier, Campinas deactivates motorcycle ambulances from Samu

The motorcycle ambulance service operated by Samu in Campinas will be discontinued due to the lack of a supplier willing to renew the contract.

The motorcycle ambulances, known as motolâncias, which have been crucial for providing quick medical assistance during heavy traffic in Campinas, Brazil, will cease operations on February 28 due to the provider's failure to renew their contract. Since the service's inception in 2018, it has faced challenges, including a lack of popularity, which has raised safety concerns in the busy city traffic. Despite their equipped sirens, the perception of effectiveness and rapid response has not translated into public demand for the service.

The administrative body, Rede Mário Gatti, reported that they will explore options to reinstate the motolâncias through potential financing from the Ministry of Health for a new bidding process. However, they have not provided a timeline for when this might happen, which leaves several unanswered questions regarding the future of this critical emergency service in a rapidly growing urban area.

As a result of this discontinuation, the five nurses who operated the motolâncias will be reassigned to ambulance teams within Samu. This restructuring indicates a redistribution of resources that may impact response times and the efficiency of emergency medical services in Campinas, particularly during peak traffic hours when the motolâncias were most useful.
