Temporary closure of traffic on part of the A1 highway – you won't be able to pass

Traffic on the A1 highway will be temporarily closed for viaduct demolition work over the weekend.

On February 21-22, traffic on the Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipeda A1 highway will be temporarily closed from 8 PM to 6 AM due to viaduct demolition work at the 113.6 km mark. Vehicles traveling in both directions towards Kaunas and Klaipeda will be redirected to a temporary road constructed alongside the highway. Temporary road signs will inform drivers of the changes in traffic patterns during this period.

Once the primary demolition work is complete, traffic on the A1 highway will return to normal; however, speed restrictions will apply in the work zone between 112.98 km and 114.21 km, reducing the speed limit from 110 km/h to 70 km/h and further down to 50 km/h as vehicles approach the construction area. Should the need arise, traffic may be temporarily restricted to one lane to facilitate essential construction work.

This decision comes amid criticism regarding the maintenance of urban roads in the capital, which has drawn attention to the inadequate quality of such work, leading to reduced funding for poorly executed tasks. As the construction of the new viaduct progresses, traffic from Kaunas towards Sitkūnai and from Sitkūnai to Klaipeda will be detoured according to approved traffic regulations, ensuring minimal disruption to the flow of vehicles.
