Entry fee has increased by two and a half times in Himachal, additional money will have to be paid to reach Shimla

The Himachal Pradesh government has increased the entry fees for vehicles from outside states significantly to boost revenue amid economic challenges.

In a move aimed at improving state revenues, the Himachal Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Sukhu, has decided to raise the entry fees for vehicles entering the state from outside. This decision comes as the state grapples with various economic challenges, and the new rates will be effective starting April 1. The increase in entry fees is expected to directly impact tourists and commercial activities as they bring their vehicles into Himachal Pradesh.

Under the new barrier policy, the entry tax has been raised by approximately two and a half times. Visitors coming with vehicles have to pay considerably higher fees, with ordinary vehicles now charged 170 rupees compared to the previous 70 rupees. Similarly, vehicles with a capacity of 12+1 passengers will see their fee increase from 110 rupees to 170 rupees as well. Heavy vehicles will also see an increase in tariffs, with entry tax swelling from 720 rupees to 900 rupees, thereby placing more financial pressure on transporters and commercial operators entering the region.

This steep hike in entry fees is expected to influence tourism and commercial activities in the state, which is heavily reliant on both sectors. While locally registered vehicles are exempt from these new charges, the increased costs for out-of-state vehicles might deter some potential visitors and could alter travel plans for those who regularly flock to Himachal for its natural beauty and tourist spots. The long-term effects of these changes on the local economy and visitor numbers remain to be seen as they unfold in the coming months.
