The Indian Navy is preparing to commission its third indigenous nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), INS Aridhaman, around April-May this year, aligning its commissioning with the anniversary of 'Operation Sindoor'. Sources have provided information that the Navy Chief, Dinesh K. Tripathi, confirmed in December that the submarine is slated for commissioning in 2026. Currently, the submarine is in the final stages of sea trials, where system verification and weapon integration work is nearing completion.

INS Aridhaman, built under the secretive Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) program, is expected to significantly enhance India's nuclear deterrent capability and 'second strike' capacity. This submarine is larger and more powerful compared to its predecessors, boasting a displacement of approximately 7,000 tons, which is substantially more than the 6,000-ton displacement of INS Arihant and INS Arighat. It is also designed to carry long-range K-4 ballistic missiles, increasing its strategic capabilities.

The development and commissioning of INS Aridhaman stand not only as a significant milestone for India's maritime strength but also serve as a strategic move in the geopolitical context of the Indian Ocean region. As tensions in South Asia continue, the enhancement of India's naval capabilities will likely influence regional power dynamics and reinforce India's position as a formidable maritime force.
