The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) in Brazil has called for the immediate suspension of the mining license for a gold project operated by the Canadian company Belo Sun in the Volta Grande do Xingu region of Pará, an area that is home to indigenous lands. This request comes as the MPF asserts that Belo Sun has not fully complied with judicial conditions designed to protect affected communities.

This legal action challenges a recent ruling by the 1st Region Federal Court (TRF1) that reinstated Belo Sun's environmental license. In response to the MPF’s claims, Belo Sun maintains that the court's reinstatement was based on solid technical and legal principles, and the company has been undertaking all necessary measures for compliance with environmental licensing.

The MPF has expressed concerns that allowing the continuation of gold exploration activities in the region could lead to permanent socio-environmental and cultural impacts. This situation highlights the ongoing tension between economic development and the rights of indigenous peoples, as well as the ecological preservation of the region.
