Campinas records more accidents, but fewer deaths in traffic in January, says Infosiga

Campinas has seen an increase in traffic accidents in January 2026, but a decrease in fatalities compared to the previous year.

In January 2026, the city of Campinas in São Paulo state experienced a significant increase in traffic accidents, with reports indicating 177 incidents across urban areas and highways, marking a 14.9% rise from the 154 occurrences reported during the same month in the previous year. Despite this increase in accidents, the number of traffic-related fatalities decreased, with only six deaths recorded, which is the lowest for January since 2021. These statistics, provided by the Sistema de Informações de Acidentes de Trânsito em São Paulo (Infosiga-SP), present a complex picture of road safety in the city.

According to Infosiga, motorcycle incidents were particularly noteworthy in the latest report, as they had the highest number of victims with 124 recorded injuries, followed closely by automobiles with 121. This shift in trends contrasts with the previous year when cars had more victims than motorcycles. In January 2025, for instance, there were significantly more injuries in cars, demonstrating changing dynamics and potential shifts in road user behavior in the region.

The data also indicates a broader ongoing discourse about urban mobility and safety in Campinas. Experts like Luiz Vicente highlight the importance of continued efforts to improve traffic safety measures, especially given the fluctuating trends in accident rates and fatalities. The juxtaposition of increasing accidents with decreasing deaths could prompt local authorities to reassess their strategies to ensure road safety and to potentially implement new initiatives aimed at reducing the number of accidents while maintaining the decreasing death rate, emphasizing the need for comprehensive traffic management approaches.
