The United States has imposed sanctions on three leaders of Sudan's Rapid Support Forces for their role in an 18-month siege of the city of El Fasher.
The United States government announced on Thursday that it has imposed sanctions on three leaders of Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for their involvement in an 18-month siege of the city of El Fasher, which ultimately led to the RSF taking control of the city. The U.S. Treasury Department's statement accused the RSF of committing heinous crimes including ethnic killings, torture, starvation, and sexual violence during military operations. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Posen emphasized a call for an immediate ceasefire for humanitarian reasons, warning that the ongoing war in Sudan threatens regional stability and facilitates the growth of terrorist groups, posing a threat to U.S. security and interests.
