Dry firewood is already out in sellers' warehouses
Estonian homeowners reliant on firewood are facing shortages as demand surges this winter due to harsh weather conditions.
This winter, Estonian homeowners who rely on firewood for heating are experiencing significant shortages as the demand for dry firewood has exceeded supply. Many residents have reported needing to use almost double the amount of firewood compared to previous winters, pushing their current stocks to the brink of depletion. As the cold weather persists, concerns grow that some households may run out of heating sources, particularly as sellers are running low on inventory of dry firewood at their warehouses.
One resident from Nõmme, Tallinn, named Hindrek, has stated that his family traditionally buys their firewood in the spring, but this year, the experience of high prices during the previous energy crisis has changed their purchasing habits. He noted that the wet and humid conditions experienced during the summer and fall have hindered the proper seasoning of wood, which complicates supply for the winter months. Hindrek typically orders 30 cubic meters of wood each year and was able to purchase it at a lower price of 65 euros per cubic meter, which decreased to 60 euros for bulk purchases later in the year.
Currently, he reports that two-thirds of his firewood has already been consumed, indicating the rapid depletion of resources. This situation not only affects individual households but also highlights broader implications for energy management and sustainability within Estonia, especially during a winter expected to be colder than usual. Homeowners are now forced to rethink their strategies for sourcing firewood, and the community may need to address the need for better supply management in response to increasing demands during extreme weather conditions.
