Estonia is experiencing an unprecedented shortage of dry firewood during one of the coldest winters in 25 years, with overnight temperatures dropping to minus 15 degrees Celsius. This severe cold has intensified the demand for heating resources, highlighting a crisis as local suppliers, like sawmill owner Taavi Rada, report that they are entirely out of seasoned firewood. The milder winters of previous years led to diminished demand for dry stocks, causing many businesses to reduce their inventories dramatically.

Adding to the challenge is the skyrocketing cost of electricity, making it economically unviable for suppliers to process new firewood stocks. This situation has forced residents to seek alternatives, which include purchasing unseasoned wood that is significantly cheaper but comes with the downside of high moisture content. As local resident Tarmo Kamm notes, the shift towards burning green wood negatively impacts air quality due to increased smoke emissions, complicating the health implications amidst a public health campaign focused on clean air.
