Moura is set to boost electric bicycle sales after tightening rules for mopeds
Moura is experiencing a significant increase in electric bicycle sales due to new regulations for mopeds in Brazil.
A Baterias Moura has reported a remarkable 65% increase in electric bicycle sales this year compared to the average in 2025, largely credited to the recent changes in traffic regulations by Contran (National Traffic Council). As of January 1st, these rules require mopeds to have license plates, and drivers to hold a National Driver's License (CNH) and wear helmets. The implementation of these regulations has made traditional mopeds less appealing compared to electric bicycles, which do not require registration or licensing.
The new regulations clearly distinguish between mopeds and electric bicycles, including self-propelled vehicles like scooters, electric skateboards, and monocycles, which are permitted under less stringent rules. This distinction has encouraged consumers to favor electric bikes, as they provide a more convenient and less bureaucratic alternative to moped riding. According to Moura, this reduction in regulatory hurdles has opened the door for increased sales of their Ella brand of electric bicycles.
As Moura continues to expand its presence in the mobility sector with its Ella brand, the company looks poised for further growth in the electric bike market, especially as more consumers seek out greener and more practical transportation options. The surge in sales not only reflects the companyβs successful strategy but also aligns with broader trends towards sustainable transportation in Brazil, making it significant for both the company and the environment.
