Media entities demand remuneration for the use of content in AI; read the full letter
Media associations in Brazil are advocating for paid use of their content in AI training, emphasizing the importance of protecting intellectual rights and the journalism ecosystem.
On Thursday, Brazilian media associations, including the National Association of Newspapers (ANJ), the Brazilian Association of Music and Arts (Abramus), and the Central Office of Collection and Distribution (Ecad), released a statement calling for technology companies to pay for the use of their members' content in training artificial intelligence models. This collective letter stresses that unauthorized use could harm the journalistic and artistic production ecosystem, discourage intellectual creation, and violate copyright laws.
The associations sent this letter to tech companies back in December, asserting their readiness to negotiate terms for authorization, remuneration, and partnerships that would benefit all involved parties while safeguarding copyright protections over the content used. This initiative highlights the ongoing tension between traditional media rights and the rapid advancement of AI technologies, which have increasingly utilized vast quantities of online content without adequate compensation or acknowledgment of its creators.
The statement indicates that if companies have already used the materials without authorization, they are encouraged to reach out to the respective associations. This stance underlines the importance of respecting copyright in the digital age, particularly as it pertains to the training of AI systems that often rely on existing media for learning and development, potentially impacting the livelihoods of creators across various fields.
