AUDIO: listen to recordings of the pilot with the tower before the emergency landing after colliding with a bird in Campinas

Audio recordings reveal the moments leading up to an emergency landing of a plane in Campinas, Brazil, after hitting a bird during takeoff.

Audio recordings obtained by EPTV, a Globo TV affiliate, illustrate the tense moments before an emergency landing at the Amarais Airport in Campinas, SP, on Wednesday afternoon, after a bird strike occurred during takeoff. The aircraft, a Baron 58 model, took off from the same airport and experienced a landing gear failure as a result of the incident. Fortunately, there was only the pilot aboard, who emerged uninjured from the ordeal.

In the recordings, the pilot communicates critical information to air traffic control following the bird strike. He relays his concerns about the landing gear, stating, 'During takeoff, I felt the impact of birds on the landing gear. I will see what I will do here, but I am without indication of the nose gear.' The pilot highlights that he did not receive any indication on the panel of a potential locking of the "bequilha," which is the front landing gear of the aircraft, increasing the urgency of the situation.

The pilot further discusses his situation with air traffic control, indicating that he lacks light indicators for the nose gear while confirming the down indicators for the main landing gear are functioning properly. He mentions, 'I’m without indication of the bequilha. I’ll try to see if I can lock it in the manual since I have no light indication. The two down indicators are working, but the bequilha is not.' This incident underscores the importance of communication between pilots and air traffic control during emergencies, as it plays a crucial role in ensuring safety during unexpected circumstances.
